No one can say that they completely abhor science. While balancing chemical equations, memorizing phases of the moon, and dissecting frogs may not have been everyone’s favorite assignments at school, science has so many branches that it is impossible for someone to dislike all of them. Learning a scientific subject has many benefits, getting an exciting, rewarding, and well-paying job is definitely among them.

 

Veterinary Science

 

Many people have animals as pets for a reason: they love them. Studying veterinary science is the ideal science for animal lovers. Veterinary science teaches how to prevent, diagnose, and cure illnesses and injuries in non-human species. Not all people who study veterinary science become veterinarians. Veterinary science graduates can become veterinarian technicians, work on farms, work in zoos,  or perform other animal-related jobs.

Though it is not thought of as a science by most people, psychology is academically defined as “the scientific study of the behavior of humans and animals.” Research methods, statistics, and anatomy and physiology play a major role in psychology. Psychology is considered a “soft science” because specific measurements and laws are hard to obtain. However, psychology may evolve into a “hard science” because genetics and other physiological factors are making behavior easier to measure. The most accurate method to catching the culprit is going on the scientific level. Forensic scientists play an integral role in turning the wheels of justice by performing DNA tests, toxicology, autopsies, and fingerprint matches. The study of chemistry and biology is involved, but the exciting career makes it worth it. The job of a forensic science technician is ranked number 10 in the U.S. News’ list of “10 Best Science Jobs.”

 

Biochemistry

 

When people are sick or injured, they automatically seek the help of medication. Medications would not exist without the help of biochemists. Biochemistry is the study of how chemical processes work in relation to biological processes. Medication is invented by studying how the body interacts with chemicals. Studying biochemistry is an excellent choice for someone who is looking to cure ailments and help others.

 

Geology

 

Beautiful sites (e.g. the Grand Canyon, national parks, mountains, beaches, etc.) attract tourism. People who love visiting natural sites can develop a deeper appreciation by studying how they came to be. Geology is the study of earth and the processes that transform it. A career in the geology field is definitely for non-desk job people because it allows for much time outside the office to study landforms.

The requirement of many years of schooling appalls many people. Science careers offer a variety of education levels that range from a certification (less than a year to obtain) to a doctorate (taking almost a decade). Careers in science offer variety, lifelong learning, and earning and advancement potential.
